The National and Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings to five districts after Sri Lanka was lashed with heavy rains over 100 mm today. Accordingly, warnings have been issued to the Colombo, Kalutara, Kegalle, Ratnapura, and Galle districts.
According to the NBRO if heavy rains continue it has asked the public of these areas to be alert for possible cutting failures, landslides, rockfalls and slope failures.
Meanwhile the Department of Meteorology today has forecasted heavy rains in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Southern provinces in the next 12 hours. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere particularly in Northern, Eastern, North-central, and Central provinces in the evening or night, the Department said. It also noted that fairly heavy falls above 75 mm are likely at some places.
Dehiowita, Kegalle reported the maximum rainfall in the past 24 hours of 219 mm.
The Department has also forecasted that Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas around the island. The sea area extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle can be rough at times. The other sea areas around the island can be fairly rough at times.
There is a possibility that nearshore sea areas off the coast extending from Kaluthara to Potuvil to Galle, Matara, and Hambanthota, may experience surges due to the effect of swell waves, having 2.0 – 2.5 m height.
Roads in several towns across Sri Lanka were inundated today after facing heavy rains. Part of the Southern Expressway running from Imaduwa to Pinnaduwa towards Colombo was also closed today.
