Government’s proposals regarding the 21st amendment to the constitution has been handed over to the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the party’s stand in this regard will be informed tomorrow (27) The National Organizer of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Tissa Attanayake said .

He said the relevant proposals were being studied by a panel of lawyers and that he would support the adoption of amendments, if any, as the party intended. He was speaking to the media in Kandy.

“The Minister of Justice Wijayadasa Rajapaksa and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party have submitted proposals regarding the 21st amendment to the constitution. The Samagi Jana Balawega also submitted a proposal. We inquire as to whether the provisions of the Nineteenth Amendment are included in the 21st Amendment. If the 21st Amendment is to be introduced as the Nineteen Plus, it must include proposals that strengthen the democratic principles beyond 19. We have talked about the abolition of the executive presidency in the resolution pertaining to the 21st Amendment to the Constitution. We will pay attention to those matters and also seek the views of the Bar Association and reply to our stance on the Government Bill, ”he said.
