The government is focusing on introducing a rationing scheme to provide essential commodities such as sugar and dhal, which have become very expensive, below the market price. Accordingly, it is reported that the Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena has prepared a cabinet paper to introduce this ration scheme so that a limited quantity of these goods can be obtained at a lower price.
Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardena has told the Sunday Times that the proposal will be presented to the Cabinet meeting to be held tomorrow (30) on Zoom technology and that he hopes to implement it with the views of other ministers.
At present, the price of a kilogram of sugar has risen to around 230 rupees and the price of a kilogram of dhal has risen to 250 rupees. In addition, prices of a number of other food items have risen significantly.
In addition, the Minister said that he hopes to submit a proposal to the low-income earners to obtain this essential food item at a lower price through the SATHOSA.
However, Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardena and his wife are currently receiving treatment for the Covid virus and their participation in tomorrow’s cabinet meeting is uncertain, sources said.
