Leader of the United National Party , former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is to be sworn in as the Prime Minister of the proposed multi party government today (12) or tomorrow sources said.
During his discussions with the President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa last night, Mr Wickremesinghe has conveyed that he would take over as Prime Minister and take over the responsibility of rescuing the country from the economic crisis faced by the new interim government as he has a majority in Parliament.
When the the President inquired from Mr Wickremasinghe that “Do you have a majority in Parliament?”
Ranil Wickremesinghe has replied he has the majority support more than required as the three groups of parliamentarians are intend to support him.
By now, members of the ruling party, members of parliament that had split from the Samagi Jana Balavegaya and a group of 11 members of the government independent party have held discussions with Ranil Wickremesinghe on three occasions.
Accordingly, a group of 153 parliamentarians were ready to support Ranil Wickremesinghe at the end of the discussions held at midnight yesterday, a senior opposition member told Lankasara.
Against this backdrop, Ranil Wickremesinghe will be sworn in and form the government soon.
Also, Ranil Wickremesinghe has taken steps to reach a preliminary agreement with the President that the Galle Face Youth Struggle will never seek to unleash illegal interference and repression again.
