A protest was held yesterday (20) in the Kopai area of Jaffna against the officials of the Department of Archaeology.
Protesters voiced their concerns about perceived bias within the department, accusing officials of favoring Buddhism over Hinduism.
The demonstrators highlighted specific incidents that they believed showcased this bias, such as the handling of a Pongal festival in a temple in Kurudumale and the deposition of treasures in the Sri Tissa Vihara pagoda in Kankasanthura, Jaffna. They asserted that such actions demonstrated unfair treatment and lack of respect for the religious objects of Hinduism.
The protestors emphasized the importance of impartiality and called on archaeology officials to carry out their responsibilities in a manner that upholds the dignity of all religions. The protest aimed to influence the government to address these concerns, and a formal letter has been submitted by the protestors to the government in this regard.
