The Chief Prelates of the three sects have written to President Ranil Wickremesinghe today (20), seeking a presidential pardon for Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero.
The Maha Sangha requested the presidential pardon in light of Wesak Poya Day. The Chief Prelates pointed out that Gnanasara Thero raised his voice for the Sinhala Buddhist nationality in the country and, at the same time, took steps to inform the security forces about extremist behaviour in the country.
The Chief Prelates also noted that Gnanasara Thero presented valuable recommendations to the Government at the President’s Commission for One Country, One Law with the aim of establishing a common legal system in the country.
While pointing out that Gnanasara Thero has worked with a good understanding of national unity, the Chief Prelates requested the President to grant a presidential pardon to Gnanasara Thero. Gnanasara Thero was sentenced to four years in prison on March 28 of this year after being found guilty of causing discord during a press conference at the Kooragala Rajamaha Vihara in 2016.
Chief Prelates of the Malwathu, Asgiri, Amarapura, and Ramanya Chapters have signed the letter sent to President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Gnanasara Thero has played a key role in certain Sinhala Nationalist movements and led the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) as the general secretary of the organization.
The Chief Prelates also pointed out that Gnanasara Thero played a vital role in winning the hearts of society and managed to provide social cohesion.
