A police constable who sexually assualted an unmarried 35-year-old woman has been sentenced to 07 years in prison with hard labor and ordered to to pay compensation of five lakh rupees to the victim and to pay a fine of twenty thousand rupees to the High Court by the Nuwara Eliya High Court Judge Viraj Wirasuriya yesterday (13).
Lakshman Saliya Bandara Virasinghe, who worked as a police constable at the Hyperest Police Station under the Nuwara Eliya Police Division, was ordered to pay fines and imprisonment with hard labour.
In addition to the prison sentence, if he fails to pay the fine, the prison sentence is to be extended by another three years.
A case has been filed before the Nuwara Eliya High Court against the constable in 2019, alleging that the constable sexually assaulted the woman while working at the Hyperest Police Station.
Under that charge, the police department had also temporarily suspended the service of the police constable and conducted a preliminary investigation. Later, on an appeal presented by the said police constable, he was appointed again in the service of the same police station.
