Following allegations, Maligakanda Magistrate Manjula Thilakaratne today (19) granted permission to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to obtain the records of 19 accounts of famous model and social media influencer Piumi Hansamali. A complaint was filed alleging Hansamali had acquired substantial properties through questionable channels. Accordingly, the alleged accounts are held across eight leading banks in Sri Lanka.
Investigators have given special attention to allegations that Hansamali had acquired significant assets, including a Range Rover valued at Rs. 80 million, which was allegedly previously owned by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Meanwhile, an investigation is being conducted into a residential property worth Rs. 148 million in Colombo.
The investigation aims to uncover the source of funds deposited into Hansamali’s multiple bank accounts. The complaint was lodged by the President of Magen Ratata organization, Sanjaya Mahawatta. Meanwhile, Mahawatta mentioned in his complaint that the famous model claimed to run only a business selling whitening cream and alleged that such a business would not generate such wealth in a short period of time. Therefore, he had requested investigators to conduct an investigation into the alleged wealth acquired by the model.
Hansamali is a well-known figure on social media. She recently announced her whitening cream product and has one of the highest-followed Instagram accounts in Sri Lanka, surpassing many other social media influencers. She is also well-known for her harsh comments on various matters and for posting about her lavish lifestyle.
Hansamali and famous makeup artist Chandimal Jayasinghe were arrested during the COVID-19 pandemic for violating quarantine laws. They organized a party at a private hotel despite the limitations on public gatherings as measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Following her arrest, Hansamali released a video expressing her displeasure toward a TV host. Meanwhile, several news reports stated that Hansamali received preferential treatment from political authorities during her arrest, which was heavily criticized in parliament.
