Over 600 guests in three wedding ceremonies at a star-class hotel in Kandy were reportedly hospitalised after consuming water contaminated by the remains of a rotten snake that fell into the water tank of the hotel.

Reports said that among the hospitalised were a newly married couple and a party who visited Malaysia for their honeymoon following the wedding ceremony.

A couple who went to Malaysia for their honeymoon after hosting their wedding ceremony at a five-star hotel in Kandy fell ill in Malaysia and were hospitalized.

It was also found that many other people who had attended the wedding ceremony were also taken ill and were being treated in the hospital.

There were two other weddings that day at the same hotel where this wedding in question was held. The health department discovered that a number of invitees that attended the wedding ceremonies had also fallen ill and were taken to the hospital.

In the end, the health department’s investigations found that 630 people were hospitalised following wedding ceremonies held in the hotel. Suspecting that this might be a water-borne problem, the health officials checked the main water tank of the hotel and found the remains of a huge rotten snake lying there.

The health department now suspects that these people have fallen ill after consuming water contaminated by the remains of a dead snake.

The secretary of the Gangawatakorale local council stated that the water samples from the water tank in question have been dispatched to the Peradeniya University water sample testing laboratory.
