No elections until the IMF reforms completed : President informs

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has informed the Cabinet and the Election Commission that there will be no room for holding any election until the economic reforms work has been completed with the International Monetary Fund.

President Wickremesinghe has said that the economic reforms in line with the IMF extended facility of 4 Billion USD process is very important for the country to move forward economically, so priority should be given to that program.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has mentioned this when the Cabinet and Election Commission officials met separately.

The President has also said that since the International Monetary Fund’s program is in effect until the end of July, no election will be held before then.

The president has stated that the presidential election will not be a hindrance to the IMF program as the time for holding the presidential election comes constitutionally after the process of the financial fund and said that the government has planned the election map accordingly.

According to government sources, the Cabinet of President Ranil Wickremesinghe as well as the officials of the Election Commission have been informed to prepare for the presidential election first.

A senior government spokesperson opted that this indicates that a general election will not be held before the presidential election.
