The government is contemplating effecting changes in the provincial governorship positions shortly.
Accordingly, the nine provincial governors are likely to be appointed based on the preferences of the President and the SLPP.
They have also agreed to share the positions accordingly. The appointment of four governors will be the prerogative of the President. The other five governors are for the SLPP to decide.
The governorships earmarked for change are those of the Western, Northern, Eastern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces.
However, there will be no change in the governorships of Southern, Uva, and Sabaragamuwa provinces. Political sources also say that the current governors will continue in those positions.
Reports said that, on the recommendation of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, two new governors for two provinces, including North Central, are likely to receive their appointments shortly.
