Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organizer Namal Rajapaksa has expressed his full support, both personally and from his party, for the abolition of the executive presidency and the reform of the electoral system, as proposed by the National People’s Power (NPP).
Rajapaksa noted that, despite promises from every president since 1994 to abolish the executive presidency, none have followed through. Interestingly, his father, Mahinda Rajapakse, and his uncle, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, both served as executive presidents, collectively holding the office for 12 years.
Representing a party that garnered only 2.7% of the vote in the recent presidential election, Rajapaksa suggested that the ideal moment to abolish the executive presidency would be immediately after the election of a new president.
He further urged that, if there is a genuine intent to eliminate the executive presidency, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake should act without delay.
