The relevant gazette notice has been issued today that a former Member of Parliament, Mujibur Rahman, has been nominated for the vacant position after the abolition of the position of Member of Parliament Diana Gamage. He will be taking oaths tomorrow accordingly.
Yesterday (8), the Supreme Court ruled that Diana Gamage was ineligible for a position as a member of parliament after hearing an appeal petition submitted by a social activist Oshala Herath that since she has British citizenship, she cannot constitutionally hold a position as a member of parliament.
Accordingly, the Election Commission was informed that Mujibur Rahman will be nominated by the Samagi Jana Balawega for the vacancy and this Gazette notification has been issued according to the powers assigned to the Election Commission.
