Y. L. M. Navami, the Additional Secretary (Procurement) of the Ministry of Health, has clarified that no complaints have been received regarding the food supplier of the Colombo National Hospital. He emphasized that if any unsuitable food is supplied to the hospital, the hospital authorities have the right to refuse it.

Navami’s statement comes in response to media reports alleging the serving of unfit food to in-patients at the Colombo National Hospital. Speaking to Lankasara, He stated that an inquiry into the matter has been initiated, with instructions given to officials to investigate the food supplied by the relevant supplier and submit a report to the procurement committee promptly.

Highlighting procedural norms, Navami explained that ingredients for the midday meal should be provided in the morning, while those for dinner should be supplied in the afternoon, as per established protocols. He reassured that food items are never stored in bulk to maintain freshness.

Navami underscored the rigorous monitoring process in place, involving public health inspectors, food inspectors, and nutritionists who daily check the food provided by suppliers before preparation. He confirmed that no complaints have been lodged regarding the food supplied by these vendors.

Addressing previous concerns, Navami mentioned that two suppliers were previously removed from serving food at the Colombo National Hospital due to inadequate quality. He emphasized the adherence to tender procedures in selecting a new supplier and warned that any written complaints received about the current supplier would result in immediate investigation and possible removal.

Navami concluded by highlighting the significant financial investment made by the Ministry of Health, allocating over 700 lakhs annually to food suppliers to cater to the needs of approximately 4000 patients undergoing treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.
