Meteorology Department Warns of Severe Weather Across Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has warned that the rainy weather currently affecting many parts of the island is expected to continue for the next few days, due to a low-pressure area remaining stable to the northeast of Sri Lanka.

According to the Department’s forecasts, the atmospheric disturbance is expected to gradually move northwards in the coming days. As a result, several areas across the island are likely to experience heavy rainfall and thundershowers.

The Department of Meteorology issued a special weather advisory again this morning (13). The warning, issued at 6.30 a.m.toady

The advisory has been categorized as a “Red Warning” for very heavy rainfall, particularly affecting the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North Western, Northern and North Central provinces, as well as the districts of Trincomalee, Galle and Matara.

According to the advisory, very heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm is expected in some areas of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the districts of Puttalam, Galle, and Matara.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall of around 100 mm is expected in parts of the Northern and North Central provinces and in the districts of Trincomalee and Kurunegala.

The Department further stated that showers or thundershowers may occur in the remaining parts of the island after 1.00 p.m.
