Police arrested the suspected Muslim individual, believed to be a Mawlawi, after he cut off about a foot-long length of a woman’s hair. The suspected Mawlawi was arrested yesterday afternoon after a complaint was filed by a woman who came to the Kandy Police station with her cut hair.
The 27-year-old victim stated to the police that while she was traveling on the bus, the suspect, who was sitting in the seat behind her, cut her hair with a pair of scissors near the Katugastota Wattaranthenna junction .
Following the incident, the woman immediately screamed upon realizing what had happened and informed the other passengers, asking for their help. The conductor and some passengers then caught the suspect.
The driver, conductor, and several people guarded the front door by locking the rear door of the bus. After locking the rear door, they dropped the passengers at the bus stops using only the front door and drove the bus to the Kandy Police.
The suspect was arrested by the police after the woman lodged a complaint.
Police say that the suspected priest is a resident of the Murutalawa area. The Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women of the Kandy Police is conducting further investigations into the incident.
