A suspect, arrested by the Kandy Divisional Criminal Investigation Division, took his own life while in custody at the Kandy Police Headquarters.
The incident occurred when a vigilant sub-inspector witnessed the suspect attempting to hang himself in the cell. Despite immediate intervention, the suspect’s life could not be saved.
The police have confirmed that the suspect used a torn belt from the sarong he was wearing to carry out the act.
Identified as H.M. Rambanda from Kadugannawa, the suspect had a significant criminal record and a history of drug addiction spanning 15 years. He was facing warrants for 12 pending cases in the Kandy Court and was implicated in approximately 60 cases related to housebreaking and property theft.
Upon admission to the Kandy National Hospital, it was discovered that the suspect had already passed away. The hospital will conduct a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
