The Police Central Anti-Corruption Squad of Walana, Panadura has arrested the main suspect in a racket of killing whales in the seas around Sri Lanka and selling their ambergris for millions of rupees.
He was arrested in Ahungalla Pudesh and he was arrested while he was preparing to sell a stock of ambergris, an excretory substance of Whales, for one billion (100 crores) rupees. 5 kg of amber has also been seized by the officials.
According to the police, the raid was conducted based on information gathered by Sergeant Jayalal and a team of detectives based on information received by Chief Inspector Indika Weerasinghe, OIC of the Walana unit, that the ambergris obtained by killing these rare whales in the deep sea is being sold to foreign nationals for crores. This ambergris is used to make the most expensive and highly scented perfumes, and because of this, smugglers sell them.
The arrested mastermind is an employee of a private company residing in the Ahungalla area.
