Hours after the Acting Inspector General of Sri Lanka Police departed Jaffna, following assurances to eliminate underworld activities, a group of masked men dressed in black forcibly entered a liquor store in Jaffna town. The attackers injured three people with swords during the incident.

The injured individuals, who were at the store to drink and purchase alcohol, have been admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

This violent attack occurred less than ten hours after the Acting Inspector General promised swift action against criminals and those linked to the underworld. The motive for the attack remains unclear, and the Jaffna Police have launched an investigation.

The liquor store owner, shaken by the group’s violent behavior, has not reopened his store since the incident.

In addition, a series of alarming crimes have recently been reported in Jaffna. Just days ago, a group of youths took the law into their own hands, attacking people partying in the city. The police have since arrested six suspects in connection with these events.

The crime wave in Jaffna has escalated, with incidents including assaults on bus drivers by intoxicated individuals, demands for food from hotel owners followed by vandalism when refused, and attacks on pedestrians involving robbery and violence.

The general public in Jaffna is deeply concerned about this surge in lawlessness, particularly as these crimes occur despite significant police and security personnel in the city.
