President of the All Ceylon Egg Producers Association, R.M. Sarath Ratnayake, has announced efforts to lower the prices of locally produced eggs compared to imports from India, aiming to benefit consumers.
Currently, eggs in the market are priced between 37 and 43 rupees, with some vendors selling them for 45 rupees. Ratnayake highlighted the association’s research, indicating that local eggs are available within this price range.
Furthermore, Ratnayake reassured the public of an ample supply of local eggs, with production now reaching 7.5 million eggs per day. This increase in production capacity positions the market for a potential price reduction in the coming months, with prices projected to fall between 30 and 35 rupees.
Ratnayake emphasized the association’s readiness to fulfill government demand for local eggs at 40 rupees each, even up to 4 million eggs per month delivered to Colombo within 10 days, ensuring a steady supply to meet consumer needs.
