The Lanka Fertilizer Company has incurred a huge loss owing to the supply of partially expired liquid fertiliser by a local supplier, the National Audit Office revealed.
The loss incurred is computed as seven million, six hundred and fifty-two rupees (7,97,16,652).
According to an agreement on April 17, 2017, between Lanka Fertilizer Company and a local supplier, liquid fertiliser was supplied to the Lanka Fertilizer Company. It has now been revealed that a portion of 1,09,408 litres of expired fertiliser worth 79,716,652 rupees was still stored by March 2021 at the Hunupitiya warehouse.
The audit office has recommended that actions should be taken to prevent such losses. It has also said an investigation should be initiated and a decision should be taken to prevent recurring losses.
However, the management of Lanka Fertilizer Company (Lakpohora) told the audit that a laboratory test was conducted on the chemical composition of expired liquid fertilizers, and pointed out that, while the fertiliser stocks in question have expired, laboratory reports show that the quality has not dropped significantly.
