The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has revealed that a BMW in the possession of former Minister Johnston Fernando was linked to a crime in the United Kingdom before it was brought to Sri Lanka. The police discovered the car’s UK origins by checking its chassis number and, with help from Interpol, confirmed that it was either stolen or involved in a crime in the UK.
Further investigations are ongoing to determine how the car was imported to Sri Lanka and whether it was assembled locally using imported parts. Fernando, who is running for the upcoming general election in Kurunegala District, appeared at the CID to give a statement after the car was found parked at the Hilton Hotel, which he owns.
Fernando was arrested and produced before the Fort Magistrate, who ordered him to be remanded until October 30th.
