The Judicial Medical Officer of the Karapitiya Hospital Janaki Warusha Hennadi who conducted the post mortem on the remains of Ven.Jinawansa Thero of Netherlands gave an open verdict yesterday (10) on the cause of death. She said body parts were sent to the Medical Research Institute for further examination and the cause of death will be announced after receiving the report.

On the morning of December 9, Galle Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela went to the scene and ordered that the body be taken to the Karapitiya Hospital for an autopsy.

Accordingly, the body was brought to the Karapitiya Hospital. A PCR test was carried out first and it revealed that the Thera was not infected with Covid 19. Later a post mortem was conducted.

Although his remains were brought to the Karapitiya Hospital morgue in Galle on December 8, the post mortem could not be conducted as permission to go ahead had not been received from the Embassy of the Netherlands.

Following the discovery of his body, the Galle Police authorities have sent a written report to the Dutch Embassy in Sri Lanka.

The Embassy of the Netherlands has informed the Sri Lankan Embassy yesterday that it has decided to approve the postmortem examination of Jinawansa Thera after inquiring from his relatives.

A senior police officer stated that although the Police teams investigating the incident have received a lot of important information, nothing can be revealed regarding the incident as it is detrimental to the investigation.

Due to engaging in meditation it is said he was strongly opposed to the noise of the surrounding environment, and he was deeply concerned about fishing in the lagoon and the movement of tourists by noisy boats.

Police investigators said they are investigating whether such a protest over these issues had caused his death.
