Colombo:
The High Commission of India in Colombo has denied media reports claiming that Sri Lankan fishermen were assaulted at sea by Indian personnel on 29 January 2026.
In a statement issued by its Spokesperson, the High Commission said it had verified the incident and confirmed that the Indian Navy or the Indian Coast Guard carried out no assault.
The statement emphasized that India has always adopted a humanitarian approach in addressing issues related to fishermen’s livelihoods. It also stressed that the use of force should not be resorted to under any circumstances.
The Indian mission further said it remains in close contact with the Government of Sri Lanka regarding such matters and will continue discussions to address fishermen’s concerns in a constructive manner.
