MP Namal Rajapaksa, the National Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), said that his father’s government did not wage war against the Tamil people and that a terrorist group no one could defeat was defeated by war heroes, But the country’s head of State does not have the backbone or pride to say this openly on Independence Day.
He made these remarks during his speech in Parliament today (05).
Expressing his views further, Namal Rajapaksa said:
“I hear people talking about Ditwah when they cannot fulfil the promises they made. Even on Independence Day, they cannot proudly speak about ending the war. When every country in the world celebrates its independence, they speak about their regiments and their achievements. Some countries still talk about the victories they achieved in the First and Second World Wars. But in our country, they want to put the gun aside.
” At the very least, if we cannot proudly speak about the victories achieved by our regiments and the dedication and sacrifice of our young soldiers, then there is something wrong. If this government thinks that defeating LTTE terrorism is racism — no, it is not racism.
We did not wage war against the Tamil people. We defeated terrorism that no one in the world could defeat. Our armed forces, police, and the Civil Defence Force achieved that victory.
>If the Head of State does not have the backbone to say this proudly on Independence Day, or if the government does not have the courage or self-confidence to accept it, that is a serious problem.
You may have your own political journey and your own agenda ,that is your politics. But at least on National Day, if you do not have the confidence or backbone to appreciate the war heroes who sacrificed their lives to end the war, then there is no point in talking about the actions of this government beyond that.”
