The Supreme Court today (15) ordered former President Maithripala Sirisena to pay the remaining 42 million rupees in compensation to the victims of the 2019 Easter Sunday attack by August 30th.
Former President Sirisena informed the court that he has already paid 58 million rupees out of the 100 million rupees total compensation ordered. His lawyer, Presidents Counsel Faizer Musthapa, requested six more years to pay the remaining amount.
On January 12, 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that the government must pay one million rupees each to the victims of the Easter Sunday attack. The court found that the respondents, including Sirisena, former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, former National Intelligence Service Chief Sisira Mendis, and former State Intelligence Service Chief Nilantha Jayawardena, had violated the fundamental rights of the petitioners by failing to prevent the attack despite having credible information about it.
The court emphasized that all the ordered compensation money should be collected and used to support the victims of the 2019 Easter Sunday attack.
