Kandy Additional Magistrate Mohammad Rafi recently issued a warrant for the arrest of former Member of Parliament Ranjan Ramanayake. Ramanayake, who is an accused in a case, failed to appear before the court on the scheduled date (21).
The case was initiated by the Special Criminal Investigation Division of the Kandy Police, following a complaint filed by a school teacher. The complaint alleged that Ramanayake had taken a million rupees from the teacher with the promise of marriage but failed to return the amount.
In 2010, Ramanayake had been arrested by the police based on the aforementioned complaint. He was subsequently released on bail, with a surety appearing on his behalf. However, during the recent court session, the surety representing Ramanayake appeared before the Additional Magistrate, who issued a strong warning.
The case is set to be called again on September 6, while investigations continue under the guidance of Chief Inspector WS Uvindasiri, the Station Commander of the Special Crime Investigation Division of the Kandy Police.
