Several areas along the Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa main road are grappling with flooding following the overflow of the Maduru Oya Kuda Oya Dam, today (11). The affected locations include Welikanda, Namalgama, Pulliarad, Jayanthiaya, and Poonani.
The main road is now under about two and a half feet of water at three specific points in Welikanda Namalgama, Pulliarad, and Jayanthiaya, as well as Poonani. This has led to disruptions in transportation, particularly for tricycles, motorcycles, and light vehicles.
Due to the flooded road, tricycles, motorcycles, and light vehicles are facing hindrances. Commuters are resorting to using tractors to navigate the affected areas and facilitate their travel.
The overflowing dam has not only affected the main road but has also led to the inundation of numerous acres of paddy fields. Low-lying areas such as Welikanda, Namalgama, Aselapura, and Ruwanpitiya are experiencing extensive flooding, impacting agricultural activities.
