For the first time in Sri Lanka Police history, it has been proposed that a female officer be appointed as the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Imesha Muthumala, who currently serves as the Deputy Director of the CID, has been nominated for this role.
SSP Muthumala was also the first female officer in Sri Lanka Police history to be appointed as the Deputy Director of the CID. She is one of the first three apprentice Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) in the country’s history. She joined the police service as an apprentice ASP on November 3, 2007, and was promoted to Superintendent of Police (SP) on March 23, 2017.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Ruhuna University and has completed a law degree at the Open University. In June 2021, she became the Deputy Director of the CID.
SSP Muthumala has completed several special training courses both in Sri Lanka and abroad. She is expected to retire in 2041 at the age of 60. With her impressive career, if the position of Inspector General of Police (IGP) becomes open to women, she has a promising future that could lead her to the highest post in the Sri Lanka Police.
