Polonnaruwa Wildlife Officials have reported the unfortunate demise of a 25-year-old male elephant last Friday (22) as it got entangled in an unauthorized electric wire placed around a private farm in Muthuwella, Velikanda.
In response to this incident, a 63-year-old resident from Welikanda Malwila village was apprehended by Welikanda wildlife officers. The suspect was presented before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate’s Court yesterday (23), where Acting Magistrate Nirmala Yatigammana ordered his release on bail set at two lakh rupees.
The arrest was carried out by Welikanda wildlife officers and the suspect was presented to the Polonnaruwa Magistrate’s Court by Polonnaruwa Wildlife Sanctuary Assistant, NDAS Nalaka.
The court, in light of the circumstances, directed wildlife officials to conduct a post-mortem examination of the deceased elephant, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into the tragic incident.
