Electricity and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera informed Parliament today (09) that the Electricity Amendment Bill is scheduled to be submitted in January. Minister Wijesekera dismissed opposition statements claiming a criminal act in implementing the draft without allowing public participation.
Addressing concerns raised by opposition MPs, including Dayasiri Jayasekara, about the automatic enforcement of the bill without time for public petitions if presented on December 12, Minister Wijesekera clarified that the bill will be formally presented to Parliament in January.
“We will present the bill in January, providing ample time for the public to file petitions. The committee responsible for drafting the bill has already sought the opinions of its members, with discussions also held with trade unions,” stated Minister Wijesekera.
