Dr. Krishantha Perera, an oncology specialist at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, who was accused of assaulting a minor employee, has been remanded by the Galle Magistrate Isuru Netti Kumara until Sunday (21). The court also ordered the immediate transfer of the specialist from Galle Ruhunu Private Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment, to Karapitiya Hospital.
The police reported the assault charge to the court through a B report, leading to the arrest of the specialist. The entire non-medical staff of Karapitiya Teaching Hospital had initiated a protest, demanding the immediate arrest of the specialist regarding the alleged attack. The protest was later ended following a discussion with the hospital director, who assured the staff that the police had taken necessary measures to address the issue.
The incident is said to have occurred during a dispute related to the protest regarding the DAT Allowance. The specialist doctor reportedly blamed the junior staff members for the strike held on Tuesday (16) leading to a heated confrontation and the alleged assault.
