Dr. Ashoka Ranwala, a long-time stalwart of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), is expected to be appointed Speaker of the 10th Parliament of Sri Lanka, which begins tomorrow, according to *Mawbima* newspaper.
Minister Bimal Ratnayake has been named the new Leader of the House, while Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has taken up the role of Chief Organizer for the Government Party.
Dr. Ranwala, who holds a PhD in Chemistry, is a member of the National People’s Power (NPP). He contested from the Gampaha District in this year’s general election, securing 109,332 preferential votes and placing sixth on the Gampaha NPP preferential list.
With a distinguished career in public service, Dr. Ranwala has previously served on the Western Provincial Council and was the Director of the Bioregeneration Economics Research Institute. He also led the Petroleum General Employees’ Union as its President and has been actively involved in politics through the NPP, focusing on the Biyagama electorate.
