A 26-year-old mother who came to the Peradeniya hospital to give birth to her first child passed away as a result of complications following the cesarean operation.
The Medical and Civil Rights Association has requested the Ministry of Health to conduct a thorough examination of the case and find the truth behind the allegations that are spreading across social media and the Internet that this death took place due to the complications caused by the low-quality anesthetic drugs given as aid from India.
The president of the Medical and Civil Rights Association, Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa stated that the Ministry of Health should take fast action to conduct a thorough examination and release a public statement regarding the accusations and gather scientific evidence to determine whether or not the claims regarding the use of low-quality anesthetic drugs aided by India are true.
He further stated that he and the Medical and Civil Rights Association condemn the Pharmaceutical Regulatory Association’s negligence in releasing subpar medications exported from India without following up on the appropriate laboratory tests carried out by the association and relying solely on the company-supplied documents before making them available to the general public. He further remarked that it is unjust for the Ministry of Health to act carelessly with precious human lives.
