Last night (15), the vehicle carrying Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama, Chairman of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority, was involved in an accident on the Southern Expressway.
The incident occurred when a sawdust-loaded lorry collided with the doctor’s jeep in the Hunupitiya area, 20 kilometers from Kalutara North. Fortunately, Dr. Wijewickrama and his family members in the jeep, including his wife and sister, escaped unharmed.
The accident resulted in the closure of the Southern Expressway for approximately eight hours. Preliminary investigations suggest that the lorry driver may have fallen asleep, causing the collision.
The driver sustained head injuries and was treated at Bandaragama Hospital. The doctor’s vehicle had stopped due to a damaged rear left wheel before the accident.
