The Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, has announced the suspension of Central Environment Authority Chairman, Supun S. Pathirage. This decision follows the arrest of Pathirage by the officers of the Bribery or Corruption Commission on charges of accepting a bribe amounting to one crore rupees.
The arrests involve three officials, including the chairman, who were apprehended by the Bribery and Corruption Commission for allegedly demanding the bribe within the premises of the Ministry of Environment. The bribe was purportedly sought in exchange for granting an environmental permit for a project.
The trio appeared before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday (11), where the court ordered their remand until tomorrow (13).
