A cardiologist and another person were arrested yesterday (05) in connection with the arrest of suspects in the sexual abuse and stabbing of a 15-year-old girl bought online.

He is a cardiologist working at a hospital in Colombo and is a resident of Bandaragama, said Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana.

The other suspect is a 33 year old resident of Kiriwattuduwa who had taken the girl to various places to abuse her and had given them to certain persons (who acted as a thug).
They are to be produced before the Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court today.

Among the suspects arrested were those who sold the girl online, transported her, booked rooms, provided rooms, abused the girl and ran websites, and created advertisements for the site.

A total of 34 suspects, including the girl’s mother, have been arrested in connection with the incident since June 7.

The Bureau of Children and Women’s Affairs, the Computer Crimes Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department and the Anti-Trafficking Investigation Unit of the Department also have contributed to these investigations.

Apart from this incident, the Senior DIG said that he also hopes to conduct a full investigation into various websites in Sri Lanka that commit child trafficking offenses.

Investigations are underway to ban such websites and arrest people who provide all kinds of services provided by women.

Following a special discussion held yesterday, the Sri Lanka Police has taken steps to focus on all websites.

Police are investigating if a woman or child contributes to the sale in any way through any website.
