The Cabinet has given its approval to the proposal presented by the Minister of Commerce and Food Security to import of 50,000 tons of GR11 rice, a variety similar to Keeri Samba, from the private sector to tackle the shortage of Keeri Samba rice in the market.
This decision aims to alleviate the current scarcity of Keeri Samba rice and introduce a solution to balance the rice market. The import of GR11 rice is expected to offer a price advantage to consumers, promoting competition and affordability in the local market for both Keeri Samba and Samba rice.
The approved stock of rice, originating from India, is priced at approximately 171 SL rupees. GR11, classified as an Indian rice product, belongs to the samba rice variety, widely utilized in preparing various dishes such as biryani, fried rice, tose, and idli.
