The Barbie film has achieved a significant milestone, crossing the billion-dollar mark just 17 days after its release, as reported by distributor Warner Bros. This achievement makes Greta Gerwig the first woman to reach this milestone as a solo director, marking a “watershed moment.”

Warner Bros expressed pride in Greta Gerwig’s directorial prowess, stating that her unique touch brought the cross-generational icon to life in a funny, emotional, and entertaining story that turned the world pink. The film’s success signals a positive resurgence for the cinema industry after facing setbacks from pandemic lockdowns and competition from streaming platforms.

The pink-hued film, starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, garnered $459 million in the US and an impressive $572 million internationally. Critics have praised the film, and it has inspired numerous selfies at Barbie doll boxes installed in cinemas across the UK.

Achieving the “Barbillion” mark is a remarkable accomplishment, with only five other films accomplishing this since the pandemic. The film has become a popular choice for cinema-goers, often paired with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Greta Gerwig, known for directing acclaimed films like Little Women and Lady Bird, also served as one of the producers on Barbie. She confidently anticipated the film’s success, predicting it would make a billion dollars during early meetings.

The film’s marketing campaign was extensive, featuring pink billboards in cities worldwide and a pink Tardis at Tower Bridge. Toy-maker Mattel is looking to replicate the film’s success with other projects, including upcoming Hollywood movies featuring brands like Barney, Hot Wheels, and Polly Pocket.

While Mattel aims to capitalize on the film’s popularity, it recently reported a 12% decrease in sales for the three months ending in June. Nonetheless, the Barbie film’s remarkable achievement remains a significant triumph for Greta Gerwig and the entire production team.
