Renowned Sri Lankan netball player Tarjini Sivalingam,has announced her retirement from the international netball tournament. The decision was made during the 2023 World Championship Netball Tournament in Cape Town, South Africa, where she represented Sri Lanka. At the age of 45, Sivalingam feels it is time to step back from the international arena.
In an interview with the “Daily Mirror,” Sivalingam expressed her gratitude for being part of Sri Lankan netball for many years. While retiring from international competition, she plans to continue her netball journey by participating in club netball in Australia. Despite bidding farewell to international netball, Sivalingam emphasized that her love for Sri Lanka remains unwavering .
Throughout her illustrious career, Sivalingam has been an integral part of numerous international tournaments. Notably, she has participated in five Asian Netball Championships (2009, 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2022) and four Netball World Cups (2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023). Additionally, she once led the Sri Lankan team in the Asian Netball Championship.
Reflecting on her recent experiences, Sivalingam revealed that she had limited training with the Sri Lankan team ahead of the World Cup, participating only in practice matches held in Botswana. Despite this, she delivered her best performances in both matches she played during the World Cup.
Throughout her impressive career, Sivalingam has been recognized with several accolades. She was honored with the World Netball Player of the Year award at the 2011 Netball World Cup and earned the Asian Netball Player of the Year award in 2009 and 2012.
As she bids farewell to the international stage, Tarjini Sivalingam leaves behind a remarkable legacy, inspiring the next generation of netball players in Sri Lanka and beyond.
