The police have indicated that a post-mortem examination on the death of 32-year-old Danish national Karen Munk Ebbesen, who tragically died while climbing Mount Alagalla, cannot be conducted until her relatives from Denmark arrive in the country.
Karen was an adventurous young woman who had a passion for mountain climbing and enjoyed traveling around the country. She was staying at a popular resort named ‘Backpackers’ in Ampitiya, Kandy.
On Monday (10) Karen set out to climb Alagalla mountain in Kadugannawa but did not return to the hostel. Concerned about her whereabouts, the hostel manager reported her absence to the Kandy Tourism Police three days later, Thursday (13). The following morning (14), the police discovered her lifeless body at the foot of Alagalla mountain a few hours after commencing their search.
To inform Karen’s relatives of her untimely demise, the Ministry of External Affairs has initiated contact with the Danish Embassy in India. Her body has been placed in the mortuary of Kandy National Hospital until her family members arrive.
During the investigation at the scene, the police found five 20 dollar notes, two 05 dollar notes, and 62,000 Sri Lankan rupees in her possession. However, her mobile phone has yet to be located.
The Kandy Police Headquarters, under the guidance of Chief Inspector Rasika Sampath, is leading the investigation into Karen’s death, as instructed by Senior Superintendent of Police Chamil Ratnayake, who oversees the Kandy Division.
As authorities await the arrival of Karen’s relatives from Denmark, they are actively conducting inquiries to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this tragic accident.
