Paul Stephens, the Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, engaged in a meaningful discussion with Indigenous leader Uruvarige Vannialatto in Dambane yesterday (30).
During the meeting, the historical background of the Adivasi community and the pressing challenges they currently confront were the focal points of the conversation. The High Commissioner expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to delve into these aspects with Uruvarige Vannialatto.
In a tweet following the meeting, the High Commissioner shared his sentiments: “It is an honor to meet with the tribal leader Uruvarige Vannialetto today to learn about their history and current challenges.”
He further noted the parallels he observed between the journey of Australia’s earliest communities in their pursuit of sustainable livelihoods, cultural preservation, and connection to their land.
