The Colombo High Court has ordered the acquittal of five defendants, including MP Namal Rajapakse, in connection with the Gowers Corporate Company incident.
This case involved allegations of money laundering, with Namal Rajapaksa accused of using 30 million rupees acquired unlawfully while serving as a MP at Gowers Corporate Company.
During the court proceedings, which took place recently, Colombo High Court Judge Navaratne Marasinghe emphasized the unreliability of evidence presented by the prosecution’s witnesses. The judge clarified that the court’s focus was solely on the evidence that could substantiate the charges brought against the defendants, rather than their status.
Additionally, Judge Marasinghe ordered the immediate lifting of the foreign travel ban imposed on Prabhat Karunajeevi, the second defendant in the case, as well as the fourth defendant who had been avoiding court appearances.
Furthermore, the judge issued instructions to recall the open warrants that had been previously issued for the arrest of Prabhat Karunajeevi.
