According to the police, the student who shot himself with an unlicensed 12-bore gun at home was a resident of the Ampara Mayadunna area.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the student shot himself at a place behind the house after coming home from school.
The seriously injured student died after being admitted to Ampara Hospital.
The reason for the shooting has not yet been revealed.
The police are investigating.
