The National Election Commission has announced that a total of 39 candidates have submitted their nominations for the 2024 Presidential Election.
Among the candidates are United National Party (UNP) Leader and President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa, National People’s Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) candidate Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) candidate Namal Rajapaksa, Mawbima Janatha Party (MJP) Leader Dilith Jayaweera, and Tamil Common Candidate P. Before the process began, Election Commission Chairman R.M.A. El Ratnayake explained the necessary documentation required for nominations:
“There is a team of legal advisors outside the nomination hall to address any issues related to the documents. Nominations can only be submitted from 9 to 11 today. The nomination paper must be submitted either by the candidate or the individual who signed the nomination paper.
Nominations from a recognized political party must be signed by the party’s secretary. If presented by another political party, it must be signed by that party’s secretary. Additionally, a candidate proposed by a voter must have the signature of that voter, as listed on the voter list. The nominee’s signature should be verified by a notary public or a conciliator, and the official seal must be affixed below the candidate’s signature.”
