The list of individuals who obtained excise licenses from January 2024 to date was tabled in Parliament yesterday by the Leader of the House, Bimal Ratnayake.
He highlighted that 172 FL 4 licenses, which are for wine stores selling alcohol at retail, were issued during this period for political purposes.
While presenting the list, the Leader of the House stated:
“The President’s Secretariat has issued excise licenses under the Ministry of Finance since January 1, 2024.
By province, the breakdown of the 362 total licenses issued is as follows:
– Western Province: 110
– Southern Province: 48
– Northern Province: 32
– Eastern Province: 22
– Central Province: 45
– North Central Province: 14
– North Western Province: 30
– Uva Province: 30
– Sabaragamuwa Province: 30
Of these, 172 FL 4 licenses were issued to retail wine stores, distributed as follows:
– Colombo: 22
– Gampaha: 18
– Kalutara: 8
– Galle: 9
– Matara: 5
– Hambantota: 5
– Jaffna: 5
– Kilinochchi: 16
– Vavuniya: 2
– Mannar: 2
– Trincomalee: 4
– Batticaloa: 1
– Ampara: 5
– Kandy: 11
– Matale: 6
– Nuwara Eliya: 8
– Anuradhapura: 4
– Polonnaruwa: 3
– Puttalam: 6
– Kurunegala: 8
– Badulla: 9
– Monaragala: 7
– Ratnapura: 6
– Kegalle: 2
We have recorded the names of all the individuals who received these licenses and have tabled the list in Parliament. It is evident that these licenses were issued as political bribes to encourage party defections.”
