A group of 180 students from the Ragama Faculty of Medicine, who embarked on a trek up Hantana mountain from Mahakanda area, found themselves stranded at the mountain top due to heavy rains causing thick fog. At approximately 10:00 pm, the students, facing difficulties, contacted their parents asking for help.
Upon receiving distress calls from the parents, the Kandy police, in collaboration with the army, initiated a rescue operation. By 3:30 am, about 120 students were safely brought down from the mountain. Unfortunately, four students, two females, and two males who fell ill during the ordeal were admitted to the Kandy National Hospital for treatment. However, their conditions are reported as not being serious.
The police strongly advise the public against attempting to cross the Hantana mountain in adverse weather conditions to prevent similar incidents.
