With our oceans increasingly under threat from plastic pollution, climate change, and human negligence, the need for urgent, collective action has never been greater. In response, AIESEC in the University of Kelaniya is proud to launch WAVEZ 2025,  a youth-led environmental initiative combining an Ocean Awareness Walk and a Beach Cleanup on July 20, 2025, at Wellawatte Beach.

This first-of-its-kind event, led entirely by youth volunteers, is rooted in the principles of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 13: Climate Action and Goal 14: Life Below Water. Over 150 participants are expected to take part, including global AIESEC volunteers, Sri Lankan university and school students, and members of the general public, united by a shared commitment to protecting the marine environment.

The day begins at 8:00 AM with the Awareness Walk, where youth volunteers will walk in solidarity, carrying placards and messages to spotlight the importance of protecting our oceans. It’s not just a walk,  it’s a symbolic movement of young voices rising for environmental justice.

Once at the beach, the participants will engage in a large-scale cleanup of the coastal area. To ensure the effort is efficient and environmentally safe, the Pearl Protectors will lead a hands-on training on best practices for beach cleanups. The event also features the #TrackTheTrash Challenge by Climate Intelligence Network,  an innovative campaign that transforms community cleanups into powerful data-driven actions. This initiative empowers participants to conduct waste and brand audits, capture creative social media content, and advocate for accountability through real-time reporting and storytelling.

Taking the cleanup even further, Neptune Recyclers joins WAVEZ 2025 as the official Recycling Partner. They will handle the collection and responsible disposal of all waste gathered, and issue a certified report detailing the volume of waste recovered, reinforcing the initiative’s commitment to measurable, sustainable impact.

More than just a one-day campaign, WAVEZ 2025 underscores the critical role youth play in shaping a greener future. Involving young people in environmental action not only fosters leadership and awareness but creates a ripple effect of long-term commitment to sustainability. Through this initiative, youth are not merely volunteers,  they are ocean defenders, changemakers, and agents of hope.

WAVEZ 2025 is made possible thanks to the generous support of Alliance Finance Company PLC, Aroma Bliss Ceylon, and Freelan Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd, whose sponsorship has enabled broader outreach and deeper community engagement.

Guided by the powerful motto, “Leaving footprints but with impact,” WAVEZ 2025 serves as a reminder that even the smallest actions can create lasting change. The ocean is not just a backdrop to our lives; it sustains ecosystems, livelihoods, and the planet itself. By empowering youth and mobilizing the community, WAVEZ 2025 aspires to spark a lasting movement for ocean protection.

The public is warmly encouraged to take part in this important event on July 20, 2025, at Wellawatte Beach. Whether by walking, cleaning, spreading the word, or simply showing up, every person adds to the wave of impact.
