President Anura Kumara Dissanayake hinted at a public rally in Galle that the government will begin another round of discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) due to the unexpected geopolitical situation that has arisen.
He said that he had already discussed the matter with the IMF, and that the organization has set certain targets for Sri Lanka to achieve this year.
However, Mr. Dissanayake emphasized that the country’s economy is showing very good progress. He stated:
“At present, an unfavorable situation has been created in geopolitics. Decisions have been made that will hurt our exports. We are making every effort to resolve this issue. While doing so, we are also planning how to manage our economy in a way that will prevent another crisis. This is a situation we did not expect, but our economy is performing very well.
We must face this problem not as political parties but as a united nation. We need to prepare together to confront such challenges. I also discussed this with the International Monetary Fund. The IMF has set certain targets for us to achieve this year. Due to the new situation, we will have to start discussions on new dimensions to adapt accordingly. We are making every possible sacrifice in the best interests of the country.”
