Police gathers information on 178600 temporary residents in Crime Prevention Efforts

Information on over 178,600 temporary residents has been collected by the police in the last two days.

The information collection was conducted following the observations that individuals involved in various types of crimes and drug trafficking throughout the island temporarily reside in rented houses and rented rooms outside the permanent police division.

Based on the observations, Inspector General of Police Deshbandu Tennakoon, on 11.05.2024 and 12.05.2024, under section 76 of the Police Ordinance Act, an information gathering and inspection operation has been launched on the temporary residents of each Grama Niladari Division.

1) 112,963 individuals in 37,183 families reside in houses obtained on rental and lease basis in the Island,

2) 34,133 individuals in 10,755 families reside in rooms obtained on rent and lease basis,

3) Information has been collected from over 178,600 individuals, including 31,517 individuals temporarily residing as watchmen, maids/nurses.

The information collected has been referred through the Arrested Monitoring Information System (AMIS) and Automated Fingerprints Identification System (AFIS) to verify whether each of these individuals is involved in crimes or arrested as suspects. The police also stated that they will refer to the data system of the Narcotics Bureau as well.
